2024 Election Updates
PRESIDENT
Former President Donald Trump (R) defeated Vice President Kamala Harris (D). Considered a swing state once again this cycle, North Carolina saw tremendous investment and attention from both campaigns. Trump won the state by 3.5%.
GOVERNOR
Attorney General Josh Stein (D) defeated scandal-plagued Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R) to become North Carolina's first Jewish Governor. His 14.64-point margin of victory is unprecedented in modern history. For context, current Governor Roy Cooper's 4.5% margin in 2020 was considered a relative blowout.
While Robinson's various scandals doomed his candidacy, the effect on other races appears to have been limited. Several Republicans in close contests whose endorsement of Robinson was a major focus of their Democratic challengers went on to win their races.
LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR
Sen. Rachel Hunt (D) defeated Hal Weatherman (R), flipping this office held by Republicans since 2012.
ATTORNEY GENERAL
Congressman Jeff Jackson (D) defeated Congressman Dan Bishop (R), maintaining Democratic control of an office Democrats have held almost exclusively for 120 years.
STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION
Former Guilford Schools Superintendent Mo Green (D) defeated Michelle Morrow (R). Morrow's controversial statements and positions helped Green flip this office for Democrats.
NC SUPREME COURT
Judge Jefferson Griffin (R) appears to have defeated Justice Allison Riggs (D). If the narrow victory holds, it means Republicans will have a 6-1 majority on the Supreme Court, completing a full reversal from the 6-1 majority Democrats held in 2020.
CONGRESS
Rep. Don Davis (D) defeated Laurie Buckhout (R)
in CD1, the State's only competitive district this cycle. Incumbent Democratic Reps. Deborah Ross, Valarie Foushee and Alma Adams, and Republican Reps. Greg Murphy, Virginia Foxx, David Houser, Richard Hudson and Chuck Edwards all won reelection, while Republican Reps.-elect Addison McDowell, Mark Harris, Pat Harrigan, Brad Knott and current NC House Speaker Tim Moore will join them in North Carolina's Congressional delegation.
LEGISLATURE
Democrats appear to have broken the Republican Supermajority in the House by one vote (71-49), while Republicans appear to have expanded their supermajority by one vote (31-19). Several of the deciding races are within the margin for a recount, so this result is subject to change.
